Day 1: Start San José

Well hello there, and welcome to Costa Rica. Today we’ll go from one extreme to the next, with a locally guided tour of the Poás Volcano National Park – which includes a chance to see the summit – followed by a walking tour in San José: Costa Rica’s magnificent capital city. First things first though, it’s time to meet your Contiki crew…

Day 2: San José to Puerto Viejo

Location: Puerto Viejo

We’ll rise bright and early this morning to make our way to Puerto Viejo (with a sweet lil stop-off along the way…). We'll head to Turrialba (also known for its volcano, and actually named after the ‘white smoke’ said volcano used to emit), we’ll bask in the area’s sprawling natural beauty, and then visit the Guayabo National Monument for a healthy dose of ancient architecture. This evening, we’ll arrive at the Caribbean coastal town of Puerto Viejo – known for its surf-savvy beaches, rainforests, wetlands and jaguar conservation efforts. You’re free to explore with your Contiki crew, and your Trip Manager will give you a brief orientation tour to help you on your way.

Day 3: Puerto Viejo

Today we’ll spend the whole day exploring Puerto Viejo – and boy does this town deserve it. We’ll go hiking in Cahuita National Park (one of the most famous national parks in Costa Rica, where you might just see sloths IRL) and check out some of the best beaches in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica and indeed the world too.

Day 4: Puerto Viejo

Wakey wakey. It’s Day 4. We have another full day in Puerto Viejo today, and some truly epic optional activities await. With river kayaking, surf lessons and a visit to a sloth sanctuary on today’s menu, there’s something for just about everyone. Also, we won’t be offended if you choose to spend today doing your own thing, or just kicking back on the coast (those white sand beaches are pretty moreish, after all).

Day 5: Puerto Viejo to Tortuguero

Location: Tortuguero

All aboard! Today we’ll take a boat trip through canals and rivers to reach Tortuguero – another of the unmissable national parks in Costa Rica. Does it get more picturesque than this? We don’t think so. Once we set foot back on dry land, we’ll have a turtle-y awesome afternoon/evening waiting for us. That’s right, we’ll visit a sea turtle conservancy on a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience… followed by the unique opportunity to go turtle-spotting at night! Wondering what else to do tonight in Tortuguero? Fear not – your Trip Manager will give you a brief orientation tour, pointing out all the unmissable viewpoints and food spots.

Day 6: Tortuguero

Location: Tortuguero

Accommodation Name: Pachira Lodge

Sure, Tortuguero is known for its sea turtles, but there’s way more wildlife to spot here – and that’s exactly what we’ll do today. We’ll take a boat trip along the winding canals, keeping our eyes peeled for monkeys, birds and more animals, not forgetting spectacular views. Tonight, after checking out one of the world’s more beautiful national parks, you’ll have another free night to explore.

Day 7: Tortuguero to San José

Location: San José

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Tortuguero, you’ve been tantalising. We’re all better and more well-rounded people now, but sadly it’s time to make our way back to where the adventure began… And that… is… that. We’ve spent one week in Costa Rica. You’re back in San José, where you’re free to explore for a while longer or make your way back to the airport. Whichever path you’re choosing, we’re pretty sure this won’t be the last time you’ll be seeing your new Contiki crew.

  • Tortuguero National Park: What can I expect when travelling in Costa Rica? Flexibility is key when you’re travelling in Costa Rica. The itinerary will give you a good idea of what your trip is gonna look like. But routes, schedules, hotels & modes of transportation may be subject to change without prior notice because of local circumstances or events beyond Contiki’s control.
  • Tortuguero National Park: What currency should I bring? You’ll need to bring USD cash with you, as it’s the only way to pay for the Free Time Add-Ons on this trip. You’ll receive the cost of each option in your Welcome Email. Plus, we recommend you bring Chilean Pesos in your Visa and/or Master Card (American Express or Discover cards aren’t widely accepted).
  • San Isidro: Can I get access to an ATM when in Costa Rica? Yup, Costa Rican cities have lots of ATMs (just be wary of those sneaky fees). But in more rural places you’re better off carrying cash.
  • Iguassu Falls: Is it customary to tip? You’ll usually receive a 10% service charge on your restaurant bill. But tipping isn’t a requirement. Either way, if you’re pleased with your service, a tip will always be appreciated! We recommend tipping 12% of the total bill.
  • Tortuguero National Park: What is the weather like in Costa Rica? Costa Rica’s tropical climate has two seasons: dry and rainy (or “green,” as locals say). Microclimates vary, but temperatures stay between 70–80°F year-round. Higher elevations dip to 50°F, while Pacific beaches can hit nearly 100°F. With no Daylight-Saving Time, expect sunrises around 5 AM, and sunsets by 6 PM!
  • Tortuguero National Park: What should I pack for my trip? You’ll be able to buy a lot of things at an affordable price once you arrive. But we’d suggest you bring:   • Summer clothes: shorts and lightweight tops essential for keeping cool. • Warm overcoat: there’ll be colder parts of your trip, even in summertime. • Good walking socks & shoes: keep comfy on any terrain. • Sturdy backpack: one you don’t mind getting dusty too!  The weather in Costa Rica is unpredictable, so it's important to pack appropriately.  - Please be sure to bring the following items: - Insect repellent - Sunscreen - Hats, sunglasses - Light rain gear - Towel  - Extra swimsuit - Light jacket/ zip off pants - Walking shoes for hiking & flip-flops & or water shoes - First aid & medication - aloe vera gel, insect repellent, hand sanitiser or gel, moisturising cream, pain relief (e.g. aspirin etc for headaches or muscle pain)  and motion sickness medication
  • How much luggage can I bring? You can bring 1 hand luggage + 1 suitcase or backpack per person. The maximum suitcase size is 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”) & weight of 20kg (44lbs). Remember to keep it light as you'll have to carry and lift your own luggage at times and even walk short distances with it.
  • Lake Arenal: Will I need vaccinations prior to travelling? Please check the latest travel info from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention if you're travelling to Costa Rica. We also recommend that you consult your local health clinic or doctor for more details.
  • Iguassu Falls: Is tap water safe to drink? Drinking tap water isn’t recommend. So, please stick to bottled water (even when brushing your teeth). There will be plenty of opportunities to purchase bottled water during the trip.
  • Tortuguero National Park: Is there any trip specific information I need to know? When booking return tickets, we recommend that you book flights departing San Jose only after 10 PM on the day the trip ends.  When you arrive, don’t exchange money at the airport (the fees are quite high!).  A passport is needed to enter Costa Rica for all passengers unless they are residents or citizens of Costa Rica.
  • Iguassu Falls: What is the role of the Trip Manager? Your Trip Manager brings the group together with all the info, fun facts and food recommendations you'll ever need. Plus, they’ll ensure everything runs smoothly and address any issues. They’ll be there with you throughout the trip and will be your go-to person if you need anything.
